RINGNECKS
RingNeck ...
If you are looking for a taste of something a little unusual, not too expensive but definitely different and possibly a great talker then a Ringneck might be the bird for you. They are very intelligent, many are very articulate, in particular the Derbyan. Ringnecks are feisty and playful; make sure their cage has plenty of room for toys. They like smaller parrot toys, with beads and leather strips to fiddle with. In the case of Derbyans, who are voracious chewers, toys are more of a challenge. We have found blocks of
wood to be their favorites, these birds live to chew! Only the toughest toys will last with Derbyans. Look for macaw strength.
Ringnecks can be territorial about their homes. It may be a good idea to put them on their playstand before you start rearranging or cleaning their cage. Early socialization is important. A Ringneck must be properly raised in order to be a good pet. Some parrots can be handraised with a minimum of attention and still be loving and sweet with humans. We have found the Ringnecks need to have more hands on time than some other species in order to have that sweet loveable pet we all desire. No problem, we socialize them with people, other birds, dogs, and children. When you bring your Ringneck home to live with you, be sure
that he gets an absolute minimum of ten minutes a day of one on one socialization until you know he is well socialized. At this
point he should stay that way. Be sure to teach them the 'Step Up' command very well, they seem much calmer if they know what to expect from you, and hearing the 'Step Up' command will let them know your intent.
Diet and overall care is similar to other parrots. We do give them pellets and parrot seed both. Seeing as they are fairly high energy birds we feel the seed is essential. Not only that but they really seem to enjoy cracking those shells open. Ringnecks are very hardy birds with a long lifespan if
30 years, maybe more. They are usually not very fond of bathing, misting them a couple of times a week will do fine. Overall they are quite easy to care for and have no special needs. We find them to be wonderful companion birds.
